Recently Rihanna’s combination with Drake entitled Work and Justin Bieber’s Sorry have been receiving rave reviews. The rhythm driven songs have been credited with Tropical House and other beats, anything but the real original pulsating beat – dancehall.
In this YouTube video the author Large Up Editor Jessie Serwer gives a reality check reminding those who have been sidelining the Jamaica originated beat from enjoying its true credit.
In his analysis he traces the similarities between producer Boi1da’s beat and Richie Stephens Sail Away Riddim in 1998.
He pointed out that Work bears an uncanny resemblance to a late 90s dancehall instrumental. But it is no secret that there is a dancehall influence on Rihanna’s album Anti which chalked up huge sales within days of it being released.
The insightful commentary from Large Up Editor gives credence to what has been talked about for a while in dancehall and reggae land. A lot of international non reggae acts have been sampling this addictive beat with it being labeled anything but what it really is.
